5 Biggest Fixtures for Borussia Dortmund in 2022-23 Bundesliga
After playing second fiddle to Bayern Munich for the majority of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund ended their league campaign in the runners-up position. The Black and Yellows nonetheless deserve credit for finishing just 7 points behind the title holders amassing 69 points from 34 games.
One of the traditional powerhouses in Germany, Dortmund conceded an astonishing 52 goals and ahead of the upcoming 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign, they’ve done an excellent job during the summer transfer window.
In a bid to end Bayern’s stranglehold over the Bundesliga trophy, Edin Terzic’s men have made some excellent signings.
Sebastian Haller has signed to fill in the boots of Erling Haaland, while Karim Adeyemi is also expected to add to Dortmund’s firepower. To shore up their defensive woes, the club from Signal Iduna Park have signed Nico Schollterbeck and Niklas Sule.
The Yellow Wall will have high expectations after such an impressive offseason and Dortmund will hope to build on last season’s positives during the upcoming 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign.
#1 Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich – 8th October
The first Der Klassiker of the 2022-23 Bundesliga season will be played at the Westfalenstadion, and it could well be one of the most crucial games for BVB in their bid to usurp Bayern’s dominance in the league.
Last year, Dortmund were unbeaten at home until Die Roten came to visit the Signal Iduna Park and walked away with a hard-fought 3-2 win.
In the reverse fixture, Bayern triumphed again, registering a commanding 3-1 win. However, a lot has changed since, while the Black and Yellow did lose Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski – who tormented Dortmund again and again since joining the Munich-based club – has also left to join FC Barcelona.
Dortmund’s last Bundesliga triumph over Bayern came way back in the 2018/19 season, that alone makes it clear, just how crucial it is to claim the bragging rights in the Der Klassiker.
#2 RB Leipzig vs Borussia Dortmund – 10th September
RB Leipzig may have finished the Bundesliga 2021-22 campaign in fourth place but after an underwhelming campaign, Die Roten Bullen will be raring to disrupt the duopoly of Bayern and Dortmund in the league.
In recent years they’ve garnered a reputation as the third biggest powerhouse in Germany and thus, BVB would be glancing over their shoulders to keep a check on Leipzig.
Last year, Dortmund lost both their league games against the Red Bull-owned club. Their first meeting ended 2-1, while the Yellow Wall witnessed a 4-1 thumping defeat at home later in April.
Edin Terzic’s men will simply have to take as many points as possible from their matches against Leipzig, or else, they will have a hard time stopping Bayern from winning an eleventh consecutive Bundesliga title.
#3 Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen – 6th August
Dortmund will open their 2022-23 Bundesliga campaign at home against Bayer Leverkusen. Last season, Die Werkself finished third in the league, just five points shy of BVB.
With a squad brimming full of talent, Leverkusen will be hoping to spoil the party again in the upcoming campaign, just as they did in February 2022, beating Dortmund 5-2 at the Westfalenstadion, while the reverse fixture earlier in September was won by Marco Rose’s side.
Facing their fellow Bundesliga title hopefuls in the first match of the season would be a stern test for the Black and Yellows, but at the same time, it will also be an opportunity to take three points away from one of their direct rivals for the championship.
#4 Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Monchengladbach- 13th May
Borussia Monchengladbach will visit the Signal Iduna Park on May 13 in a fixture that could have a huge impact on the final standings of the Bundesliga 2022-23 season.
The rivalry between these two clubs has become more and more intense with each passing year, given their battle for European places and from that perspective, the result of the Dortmund vs Monchengladbach match could have a direct implication on where these two sides will finish in the table.
In their previous meeting, the Black and Yellows ran riot at home as they thumped Die Fohlen 6-0, however, they faced a 0-1 upset in the earlier fixture in September.
Monchengladbach finished a lowly 10th last season, after an inconsistent campaign, but given the history between these two German powerhouses, fans can expect plenty of fireworks when they come face to face.
#5 Borussia Dortmund vs FC Schalke – 17th September
One of the fiercest rivalries in Bundesliga history, the Revierderby will be one of the biggest fixtures of this season, after Schalke earned promotion back to the top division, having spent the 2021-22 campaign in the second tier.
Dortmund and their eternal rivals are separated by just 20.5 miles, and their meeting on 17th September will surely be a high-octane affair, that too, just seven days after the Black and Yellows’ fixture against RB Leipzig.
Schalke has lost the previous three meetings between these two teams, with the Royal Blues’ last win over BVB coming back in the 2018-19 season, when they ran out 4-2 winners.
