Gamescom has returned to the Koelnmesse, marking the first time the monolithic games event has taken place in person since 2019. The Cologne-based show offered up a ton of great games for all tastes, and while we got our hands on several games behind the scenes, it’s hard to predict what will wow you.
Gamescom is one of the world’s largest events for computer and video games and features some of the biggest announcements and reveals of the year. Gamescom 2022 was filled with reveals, demos, news, interviews, games, and so much more. From the bloodiest to the bloody brilliant, these are the very best things we’ve seen at Gamescom 2022 so far.
Dune Awakening
Frank Herbert’s enticing sci-fi novel has already been adapted into a film series, and now, Dune Awakening is one of the several upcoming games set in the Duniverse.
Inspired by both, the legendary 1965 book and the Denis Villeneuve film, Dune Awakening is an open-world MMO with survival elements and base-building.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
We’re getting a game adaptation of the cult ’80s horror comedy, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. It’s a 3v7 asymmetric multiplayer game, coming from the director of the Friday the 13th game, where a team of seven humans craft weapons to defend themselves against the three invading clowns, in a desperate battle for survival.
For fans of the growing asymmetrical horror genre, the addition of a few more killers in this game should set it apart from Dead by Daylight or Evil Dead: The Game.
Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2 is back after eight years since its predecessor’s release in 2014
After eight years, Dead Island 2 is back, and it’s gorier than ever. Dead Island is an entirely separate zombie-slaughtering series set in an open-world California. Just like its predecessor, which debuted in 2014, Dead Island 2 is a first-person action RPG with a big focus on melee combat and guns.
There will be six playable characters, online co-op, and if you’re playing on Xbox or PC, a new feature called Alexa Game Control will allow you to taunt zombie hordes using your real voice.
Lies of P
Lies of P’s ‘Pinocchio meets Bloodborne’ has to be one of the darkest retellings of the story of Pinocchio. The new gameplay reveals new locations and enemies, as well as the inclusion of other characters from the story.
Lies of P is an action sand-like in which you play as the ‘puppet mechanoid’ known as Pinocchio, who must lie if he is to find Mr Geppetto and become human.
There’s also a hint that Jiminy Cricket might feature, but since the cheerful cricket previously only appeared in Disney’s version of the story, we’re intrigued to see how it might play out.
Gotham Knights
A Batman game that doesn’t feature Batman? Yes, that’s how Gotham Knights is going to be. Gotham’s Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood navigate Gotham’s take on the criminal underworld without the Caped Crusader.
Both, Batman and Police Commissioner, Jim Gordon, are presumed dead, allowing Harley Quinn and a host of the city’s other supervillains to cause mayhem.
They’re certainly doing that in the latest trailer of Gotham Knights, an open-world action RPG that lets you play as each of the four heroes, either in single-player or in two-player co-op.
High On Life
High On Life is a Hilarious Sci-Fi Shooter From Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland
High On Life, a game that seems to come right out of the mind of Justin Roiland, creator, writer, and voice-over artist responsible for Rick & Morty, is going to be full of wacky ideas and concepts.
With talking weapons with their own distinct personalities, a colorful, vibrant world, and a slew of foul-mouthed enemies, this game is guaranteed to make you laugh as you murder them.
It’s a first-person shooter, but with a difference. High On Life looks like it’ll be a guaranteed hit with anyone that likes Rick & Morty, and for the wider audience who enjoy their weapons gloating as they hit their targets.
Hyenas
Pitting several teams of players against each other and a space station full of AI guards in a bid to steal as much pop culture detritus as possible, Hyenas is a unique concept by itself, and it seems to have a top-notch world.
Produced by the same Creative Assembly that brought us Alien Isolation, there will be plenty of Sega merch to pick up, and enjoy the sheer number of the 80s and 90s references.
Hogwarts Legacy
The Hogwarts Legacy kicks off with a Salazar Slytherin name drop and two Hogwarts pupils being very sternly warned not to use dark magic. But we all know they are going to be doing exactly that. There are trolls, zombies, creepy tombs, and, to round it all off, a nice hippogriff.
