The inaugural edition of the Commonwealth Esports Championships 2022 saw the Indian contingent participate in Dota 2 and Rocket League. Of the three available esports, India fielded a team for two. After a notable performance in the group stage and conceding a loss in the semifinals, the Dota 2 team has a shot at the bronze medal. The Indian team will play next on August 7.

The Indian contingent for Rocket League, however, crashed out of the tournament. The team did not register a single win in their group stage matches. The Indian team could not replicate the remarkable performance they displayed during the regional qualifiers.

The Indian Dota 2 team had two matches in the group stage against Wales and England in a best-of-one format. The team comprising of Moin Ejaz, Ketan Goyal, Abhishek Yadav, Shubhnam Goli, and Vishal Vernekar secured their first win in the very first match, against Wales, with a 60-15 scoreline. The Radiant Indian team had a dominant performance throughout the match with hero selections like Necrophos, Tiny, Nyx Assassin, Phantom Assassin, and Dazzle.

In their game against England, India tweaked their hero selection to Legion Commander, Tiny, Faceless Void, Skywrath Mage, and Winter Wyvern. However, this time, Team India could not register a win and the game ended with a 22-53 loss.

Based on the result, the Indian Dota 2 team qualified for the semi-finals and went up against Team Malaysia on the same day. The semifinal was a best-of-three series. The Indian team chose Underlord, Razor, Hoodwink, Lina, and Dawn Breaker from the roster in their first match.

However, Malaysia dominated the game with an Invoker-Timbersaw pick and emerged victorious within 25 minutes. In the second match, Team India picked  Skywrath Mage, Tiny, Dragon Knight, Juggernaut, and Grimstroke for the playoff. Malaysia claimed yet another speedy 39-19 victory as the game ended in under half an hour.

India’s Rocket League team at the event comprised Hargun Singh, Sandeep Sahani, and Rushil Reddy. They were in Group B along with Canada, England, and Wales. After their emphatic performance during the regional qualifiers, where they won 3-2 over Pakistan, a 3-1 victory over the Maldives, and a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka, fans were hoping to see a rerun of the dominance.

Team India’s first match was against Team Canada, which ended in a 0-3 loss in the best of five series. The Indian team never found their footing in the remaining matches, and both Wales and England as well won rather quickly in their respective series with dominating performances.
