CS:GO hits 1 million player count for August 2022 and releases birthday stickers for 10-year anniversary

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is celebrating its tenth anniversary on August 21, and it keeps climbing to new heights and shattering records. On August 17, Steam Charts reported that CS: GO had hit 1,039,889 concurrent gamers.

Not every online game survives through changing times to celebrate the 10th birthday. The Counter-Strike franchise, however, is a different story altogether. The franchise has been around for more than 20 years, and CS: GO, its last instalment, is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary on August 21.

Counter-Strike was first launched in 1999 as a mere Half-Life mod. But, over the years, the tactical shooter left the shadows of its original game and became a success all over the world. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was launched in 2012. Even though it initially faced much criticism from professionals and gamers, its mechanics caught on, and many young players started religiously playing the game and went on to become absolute stars.

1 Million Player Count

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is arguably one of the most successful video game titles of all time. On August 21st, CS: GO will celebrate being 10 years old. It seems like gamers gathered together in enormous numbers to celebrate the birthday week, bringing the average user count for the last 30 days to a solid 613,243.5 gamers. This resulted in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive reaching its highest peak, concurrent player count since May 2021. 

In May 2021, the game hit its highest peak player count ever with 1,087,197 concurrent players clocked in playing CS: GO. What’s more impressive is that Counter-Strike: Global Offensive also reached a peak of 1,039,889 concurrent players. CS: GO achieved this milestone just four months after previously having accomplished a peak of concurrent players in April 2022.

CS: GO had attributed a loss of 63,457.6 players back in 2021, amounting to a loss of 8.77%. However, this time around, the game saw a gain of 18,790.4 players. This has been an interesting takeaway and an important thing to note.

10-Year Anniversary: New Maps, Stickers, and More

Speaking of the 10th anniversary, Valve recently released a unique birthday week update for CS: GO. As part of the celebrations, which began on August 17, five new maps were added to the official matching pool. Amongst these new maps, the much-anticipated Tuscan map was released as well, which is highly a popular map in Counter-Strike: 1.6. 

Alongside the Tuscan map, Breach and Anubis make a return to the game. Both maps had previously been featured as rotation maps. The other two maps are Wingman maps, namely, Primetime and Blagai.

Along with new maps, Valve also released a collection of birthday stickers called, “10 Year Birthday Sticker Capsule.” Since its early days, CS: GO has had the presence of cosmetics like weapon skins, graffiti, and stickers. It allows players to customise their inventory while allowing Valve to keep investing in the game’s longevity and its esports ecosystem. 

Similarly, the developer launched a collection of 65 stickers made by the community. You can buy the sticker capsule directly from CS: GO’s menu or buy your favourite ones via the Steam Market.

This collection of 65 stickers was curated by Valve through the CSGO10 Sticker Contest announced in March earlier this year. The stickers include famous quotes from the Counter-Strike world, such as “Rush B”, the monster of Overpass, references to CS: GO‘s chickens, and even Olofmeister’s miraculous defuse while he was on fire.
