Dominic Drakes have bolstered the Warwickshire side in T20 Blast 2023

We are midway through the English Summer and the core of cricketing action in the UK, the T20 Blast will see its Quarter Final stages get kicked off. Warwickshire and Essex will be squaring up against each other in the first Quarter Final of the ongoing season to be staged at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The Birmingham Bears were crowned at the top of the North Group points table after securing 22 points from 14 matches. They won 11 games and lost just three, having the best win percentage in the ongoing tournament.

The Alex Davies-led unit is arriving on the back of five wins. In the absence of usual skipper Moeen Ali, Davies has done a superb job leading the side. They initiated the tournament with four triumphs on the trot and then were on the receiving end of a hat-trick of losses. Derbyshire (twice) and Nottinghamshire are the only teams to taste success against the Birmingham-based community.

On the flip side, Essex has secured 16 points from the quota of 14 matches, finishing at the fourth spot in the South Group of the T20 Blast. They won eight matches and lost six games. They initiated the tournament with a victory against Gloucestershire and followed it by beating Sussex Sharks. Right after they were defeated in back-to-back games.

Eventually, the side picked themselves up and was on a five-match winning spree. This served as the bedrock of their qualification scene as Essex was far ahead of the other teams.

However, four consecutive defeats followed, and right in their last game of the league stages, the Simon Harmer-led unit managed to go past the finishing line against Surrey which helped them cement a quarter-final spot. It was a must-win encounter for them otherwise Kent Spitfires would’ve sealed the spot.

What have they done so far?

The Birmingham Bears are a formidable side who have defended tricky totals and chased down in various conditions.

Skipper Alex Davies usually opens the batting alongside Robert Yates. The pair has been superb throughout the tournament and Yates is arriving on the back of consecutive half-centuries and has been a crucial part of the side. Glenn Maxwell has been batting in the middle order but failed to notch up big runs. Dan Mousley has played those impactful knocks lower down the order at the need of the hour.

Talk about the bowling, Henry Brooks has been spearheading the attack along with Pakistan pace sensation, Hasan Ali. Danny Briggs, Jacob Lintott, and Maxwell have been doing the bulk of the wicket-taking job in the spin department.

Meanwhile, Essex has been well led by captain Simon Harmer who scalped a hat-trick against Sussex earlier in the tournament. Michael-Kyle Pepper has been one of the best batters for the side so far in the tournament. He is also coming off a blistering knock of 75 (39) against Surrey. Dan Lawrence and Feroze Khushi have played some impactful knocks.

Daniel Sams and Matthew Critchley have been some serious all-rounders for them who have shown calibre with both bat and ball. Samuel James Cook and Aaron Beard have been leading the pace attack for them.

Head-to-Head Record

Warwickshire and Essex have faced off against each other on two occasions in the T20 Blast where the Bears have bore sweet fruits twice. The Bears defeated Essex once in the 3rd Quarter Final of T20 Blast 2014 and in the next season they shadowed the opposition in the 2nd Quarter Final.

Key Players

Daniel Sams (Essex): The Aussie all-rounder has been in spectacular form during the ongoing T20 Blast 2023. He has been the game-changer with both and the ball in hand.

Daniel Sams has been brilliant throughout the T20 Blast season

Sams have stockpiled 340 runs and snapped 22 wickets from 14 innings. He is the leading wicket-taker for Essex this year and has played some fiery innings with the willow in hand lower down the order. The 30-year-old is someone who can challenge the edges of the bat with the new sphere and also varies the pace during the slog overs.

Dan Mousley (Warwickshire): The young bloke has tasted a purple patch during his stint in the T20 Blast 2023. He has managed to bag 20 wickets from 14 innings and has gleamed with the bat in hand.

Critchley’s figures of 5-18 against Middlesex were his best numbers with his right-arm off-spin. He also scored a century against Somerset during the First Class season.
