Bangladesh Cricket Board has added Under-19 batter Shorna Akter to their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in South Africa in February.

Shorna will have three other Under-19 teammates Disha Biswas, Marufa Akter, and Dilara Akter- joining her, all of whom were a part of the national team during the tour of New Zealand.

The four cricketers are currently taking part in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.

Women’s Selector Monjurul Islam said that they have added the four cricketers at the back of their performance in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 tournament.

“We formed the team thinking about the format and the format is T20 and we will be playing in South Africa. The Under-19 World Cup is currently played in South Africa and after that our women’s national team’s T20s will be played,”

said the selector.

“There are a few young performers like Under-19 skipper Disha, Dilara, Shorna, and Marufa and they are performing there. They (three Under-19 players) have been with us during the tour of New Zealand and along with them we have included experienced campaigners as well. We have formed the team keeping the condition in mind.”

Captain Nigar Sultana expressed that she is hopeful that the team will do well in the tournament.

“The team is well balanced and there are lots of young talented cricketers in the squad and along with them there are couples of experienced campaigners in the team as well so I am hopeful with the team,”

said Nigar.

Sharmin Akhter Supta, Fargana Hoque Pinky, Fariha Trisna, Rabeya, and Sanjida Akther Maghla, who were part of the squad that headed out to New Zealand, failed to hold their place while Shamima Sultana and Sobhana Mostary made a comeback.

The team will leave Dhaka for Cape Town on January 23 for a pre-event practice camp and two practice matches against Ireland before the beginning of the tournament.

Bangladesh will also play two warm-up matches against Pakistan (06 February in Cape Town) and India (08 February in Stellenbosch) before they start their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on February 12.
