Jalal Younis says we have to discuss the aggression with coaches

Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Monday that they feel the national coaching unit needs to impart forcefulness in the attitude of the group to prevail in limited overs cricket.

BCB has called the coaching staff to Dhaka after the visit through Zimbabwe to examine their tentative arrangements considering the board is worried about how the group is moving toward T20Is specifically.

Since Bangladesh’s home win over Australia and New Zealand in turn well-disposed conditions, they’ve hardly enjoyed any consistency in the shortest format, losing 15 out of 19 matches.

Bangladesh has suffered in the T20s due to an inability to play an attacking brand of cricket, an essential to do well in T20Is.

Russell Domingo and his coaching staff have a decent portion of the fault distributed to them for neglecting to rouse the team to play this brand of ‘fearless cricket’ presented by former head coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

“The support staff is very dedicated but maybe their way of coaching is different. Some coaches are aggressive, some coaches aren’t aggressive,”

BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters at the Mirpur on Monday (August 8).

“You talk about Hathurusingha [who coached Bangladesh from 2014 to 2017] – he has the aggressive style we need. Our head coach [Russell Domingo] is a very knowledgeable coach, but he is not that aggressive. We want that aggression.

“We feel Chandika can motivate players in the right way. Tell them to have an aggressive attitude on the field. I think there lies the difference.

“We need someone who can transform us from playing slow cricket to playing attacking cricket, how it is played in T20s. Our coaches are professional and competent. But we have to discuss the aggression with them. We can’t just replace them on a whim. We have to know their plan. They are supposed to land on August 19, so we are likely to sit the next day.

“We need to have a comprehensive plan until the England [white-ball] series [in March] next year. We have back-to-back tournaments coming up, so there are issues of player availability and injuries,”

he added.

Jalal added that the BCB felt the side should have been more forceful against Zimbabwe during the T20Is but also noticed that they are not completely crippled considering the administration was attempting to roll out a few improvements to make a more valiant T20 unit.

“We all saw what happened so you can evaluate what happened in the third T20I. We should have chased down that target. We admitted that we are not good in T20s, so we took a positive approach to make changes in the team,”

said Jalal.

“We had a very precise plan, which we wanted to implement [in Zimbabwe]. Maybe those we selected didn’t perform up to the mark but we are not disappointed,”

he added.
