India was on Tuesday fined 40% of their match fee and punished two ICC World Test Championship points for keeping a delayed over-rate against England in the rescheduled fifth Test in Birmingham.

England sealed the game by seven wickets to level the series 2-2. The series gushed out over to this year because of Covid-19 cases in the Indian camp last year.

While England chased down the target of 378 runs against India in the morning session of the fifth day with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow remaining unbeaten on 142 and 114, respectively.

“That’s the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us,”

Bumrah said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

ICC match referee David Boon forced the authorization after India was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,”

the ICC said in a statement.

“In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) playing conditions, a side is penalized one point for each over short. Consequently, two WTC points have been deducted from India’s points total.”

India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Alex Wharf leveled the charge.

The side also not only lost a valuable chance to improve their percentage points in the World Test Championship table, but they have also moored points because of delayed over-rate and thus dropped to the fourth spot, with arch-rivals Pakistan moving up to the third spot.

After the penalty, India is on 75 points, simply a shade beneath Pakistan’s 52.38%.
