Ashleigh Barty, champion of the WTA 1000 series tournament in Miami, which took place from March 23 to April 4 on Miami’s outdoor hard courts, commented in her short interview on the opinion that she didn’t deserve to be the first racket of the world. It appeared because all last year, the current world number one didn’t act because of the pandemic.

“I didn’t have to prove anything to anyone. I know how much work we did with the team. There was a lot of talk about my ranking, but last year I didn’t play at all, and I didn’t add a single point. Yeah, I didn’t go down, but I didn’t improve either. I basically didn’t perform,”

Ashleigh shared.

The world number one also said the other girls might well have improved their rankings, so she felt she fully deserved to be No. 1. Barty thinks she had a great 2019 season, and it’s great that things are shaping up like this. She decided for herself she would work regardless of anyone else’s opinion. So she doesn’t feel like she has to prove anything to anyone.

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I can’t control that. I just have to concentrate on my tasks.”

Ashleigh thinks some people just need to accept that the pandemic has intervened in all areas of life. Chances are, many will only experience this once in their lives, and it’s very hard. But in her opinion, all this controversy is none of her business.
