Crystal Palace News & Current Form:

The Eagles sit in 12th place in the standings without any hope of progression. The new year has not been a turning point for the team – the last 9 meetings have ended in either a draw or a defeat. Thus, for 1 round, the team gets a maximum of 1 point in the piggy bank. In the 3 months since the start of the year, Crystal Palace have earned only 5 points, less than all other Premier League clubs except AFC Bournemouth

The players have won six matches, drawn nine and lost ten, earning 27 points and a goal difference of -11 (21:32). So far the gap from the relegation zone is comfortable, but it is noteworthy that now we have to talk about the risk of relegation – after all, it was  thought the club would compete for the European Cup after a nice last season.

It’s the attacking line that suffers the most. The Glaziers have scored just four goals since the start of the year, none in their last two games, and they only struck three times on goal in the whole game against Aston Villa FC (1 – 0). On the bright side, though, Crystal Palace have managed to draw with the likes of Manchester United FC (1 – 1) and Liverpool FC (0 – 0). If they wished, Patrick Vieira’s men could take a nasty toll on the Citizens and snatch the cherished three points from them.

Last weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa saw Crystal Palace play their ninth consecutive game in the Premier League without a win, the longest winning streak in the league. Prior to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, no one could have guessed that the team would have such results.

Nevertheless, Patrick Vieira is optimistic, with the mentor stating that his side are not heading into the thick of the battle for survival. Furthermore, the Eagles boss has stated that they know they can compete with teams such as Manchester City, which is probably a fair assessment.

Midfielder James McArthur has 250 appearances for Crystal Palace FC

James McArthur was recovering from injury for 10 months and now he is finally capable of playing. He shared his emotions about being on field after such a break:

“It was nice to be back. When I was on the bench for a few weeks, it was nice to be involved again, but to finally get some minutes was nice – obviously under difficult circumstances.“

“Losing the game was tough, but to be out there, trying to help the team again, was what I’ve been working so hard for. Especially after such a long time out – all the hard work in the gym, all the frustrating days you have when you’re injured – to finally be back out there with the lads was a nice moment.”

He also talked about the game with Man City:

“They’ve got world-class players right throughout the team – they’re one of the best teams in the world. We need to stop their threats all over the park, and do everything right. There’s no better team in the league for dominating possession, so I think it’s important we get in their faces and make it an uncomfortable place to come to.”

“We’ll need to stick together. We know that they’re going to have a lot of the ball, so we won’t start running out of position. When we get the ball, we’ll be patient. We’ll have a good game plan and we’ll stick to it. If we do that, we’ve shown before we can beat these teams.”

“Our fans are unbelievable, and we are going to need them. They have been so patient when we know we’re not on a good run. We need them more than ever, and we need them to stick with us. For me, there’s no better place than Selhurst Park under the lights. If the fans keep with us and keep driving us on, we will turn it around, and we will get wins.”

Cheick Doucoure will miss this game because of suspension. Sam Johnstone is injured so he won’t help his team in this clash.

Manchester City News & Current Form:

Manchester City have won four of their last five EPL matches comfortably, scoring 12 goals in total. No team has ever scored so many points in 2023. Guardiola’s side have won eighteen games, drawn four and lost four, scoring 58 points and a goal difference of +41 (66:25).

The Citizens work to the slaughter, realizing every good moment, but still trailing Arsenal FC. A win over Crystal Palace would cut the gap to two points and surely make the Gunners nervous before the next game. The chances of such an outcome are high, especially since the meeting will take place away, where Guardiola’s charges are particularly stable – out of 31 away Premier League games, Man City have lost only three.

The team is now under threat of severe financial and other sanctions for a series of permanent rule violations. But so far, the situation there has dragged on, and there seems to be no immediate threat of losing trophies and being thrown out of the Premier League.

The visitors have no problem with scoring, but they don’t do it in the first half, as even the favourites have only managed to score in the last nine meetings against the Eagles after halftime.

Nevertheless, with striker Erling Haaland scoring six more goals more in the top division than the entire Crystal Palace team, such a result would surprise few, especially when you consider that his debut hat-trick in the EPL came in the first-round encounter.

City recently drew with RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League (1-1) and there will be a return game on March 15 at home. In the Emirates FA Cup, there was a win over Bristol City FC (0-3), the team from the middle of the table. In the last round of the Premier League the Blues managed to defeat Newcastle United FC (2-0).

Edouard Mendy and Rico Lewis, who has a foot injury, cannot take to the pitch today.

Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva could leave the team. The management of City want to sell the player. The club values Silva at €65m. It is noteworthy that FC Barcelona were ready to pay €70m in the winter but the English rejected the offer.

Ederson Moraes, the Citizens’ goalkeeper, has recorded his 100th dry game in the EPL, having played 208 games in the league. Ederson is the 17th goalkeeper to reach that mark, with only Petr Cech (180) and Pepe Reina (198) needing fewer games. The leader among current players is Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea (140).

What has been said before the match:

Patrick Vieira, boss of Crystal Palace, ahead of the difficult clash with Manchester City:

“It’s about us believing in what we are doing. It’s about us being clear about the roles and responsibilities of players on the field. There is always belief and confidence in the players.”

“No win in ten, of course you think about it. You try to work to win football matches, to create chances to score goals. We had some really tough games and the next three are not going to be easy. We have to face it.”

“It’s a really good challenge and myself and the players are looking forward to it. It’s important to compete against the opposition. I felt we competed well against the teams in front of us.”

“It’s about us believing in what we are doing and being clear about the role and the responsibility of the players. There is always a belief and a confidence in the players.”

City’s coach Pep Guardiola about Patrick Vieira and Saturday fixture:

“I’ve not been with Patrick Vieira in the locker room, but his experience as a football player. He was in France, already had big experience, and with Crystal Palace he’s done a really good job.”

“In the Premier League, every game is difficult, at home as well.  As Crystal Palace, we struggle a lot to get results.”

Phil Foden is okay and will play in this game.”

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City Prediction:

We see no suggestion that the 2023 underdog will be able to clinch tournament points in the game against the EPL star-packed hegemon. Besides, the stats, quality of players and support in London are on the side of the visitors – the Sky-Blue side has a huge army of fans everywhere. We believe that Man City will not go anywhere without three points.

We expect full control of the ball by the Mancunians, who have a huge motivation and desire to get close to Arsenal at least for one day. We expect a solid win for the favourites, with a comfortable scoreline.
