RB Leipzig celebrated their 3-0 win in front of a sell-out crowd

The Bundesliga never fails to surprise its fans and after another set of unpredictable yet exciting fixtures, we have new league leaders in Union Berlin. Bayern Munich was held for the third week in a row, while RB Leipzig announced their comeback with a 3-0 comfortable win over Borussia Dortmund

That, and much more happened over the weekend, and here’s a full recap of all the action that went down.

Werder Bremen 0-1 Augsburg

Werder Bremen were looking for their first home win of the Bundesliga 2022-23 season as they welcomed Augsburg to the Weserstadion. Despite having lost their last three games in the league, the visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock after just eight minutes only Florian Niederlechner couldn’t sort his feet out in the nick of time.

As the rain continued to pour down, the contest was still goalless at the break. Shortly after the hour mark, Augsburg got their noses in front, courtesy of Mergim Berisha’s teasing cross was tapped into the net by Ermedin Demirovic.

Berisha nearly scored one for himself, only to hit the woodwork after chipping the goalkeeper. Late drama followed suit as Werder was awarded a stoppage-time penalty but Rafal Gikiewicz made a stunning save to secure his clean sheet and all three points for Augsburg.

Hertha Berlin 2-2 Leverkusen

Having won just one game since the start of the new season, Bayer Leverkusen were feeling the heat as they travelled to the capital. There were chances at both ends, but it somehow remained 0-0 at the break. Kerem Demirbay opened the scoring with a wonderful free-kick to give his side the lead shortly after half-time.

They weren’t ahead for too long as Suat Serdar stroked home the leveller six minutes later. Marco Richter then put the hosts ahead with a screamer from outside the box, but it wasn’t to be the winner as Leverkusen pulled level once again as Patrik Schick drilled in to rescue a point for Gerardo Seoane’s men.

Hoffenheim 4-1 Mainz

Hoffenheim was in good form of late and they welcomed Mainz on matchday 6. It was a game of two halves as the first 45 minutes saw Alexander Hack pick a red card but Andrej Kramaric blazed the resulting penalty wide.

The match exploded to life after the break, but the Croat redeemed himself with an acrobatic finish shortly after the restart. From then on, the floodgates opened as Grisha Promel, Mu’nas Dabbur and Pavel Kaderabek all got their names on the scoresheet. Dominik Kohr also got a consolation goal for Mainz but they went back home empty-handed.

Leipzig 3-0 Dortmund

RB Leipzig sacked Domenico Tedesco after an abysmal start to the season and hired ex-BVB coach Marco Rose whose first task was a reunion as Dortmund came to the town. Indeed it was the hosts who took the lead as Willi Orban headed in from a corner to draw first blood.

Dominik Szoboszlai was allowed to shoot from outside the box and he fired a rocket into the top corner to double Leipzig’s lead at the stroke of half-time. Into the second half and Rose’s men kept knocking at the door. Timo Werner had already missed a couple of chances earlier, but he set it up on a plate for Amadou Haidara to put the game to bed and seal his side’s second win of the season.

Bayern 2-2 Stuttgart

Julian Nagelsmann needed a response from his side after being held in their previous two league games. After being denied the opener courtesy of some good work between the sticks from goalkeeper Florian Muller, Bayern finally opened the scoring courtesy of Mathys Tel who became the club’s youngest-ever goal-scorer in the Bundesliga.

Shortly before the hour mark, Stuttgart got their equaliser courtesy of Chris Fuhrich who finished with aplomb. Their joy was short-lived however as the Bavarians were in the driving seat once again as Jamal Musiala curled in a beautiful goal from his left foot into the bottom corner.

Serge Gnabry was denied the winner by the Stuttgart goalie and the hosts then rattled the woodwork from a Serhou Guirassy shot. He would have his say on the contest as the striker fired a spot-kick past Manuel Neuer at the death after the former was adjudged to have been fouled by Matthijs de Ligt.

Frankfurt 0-1 Wolfsburg

Eintracht Frankfurt put four past Leipzig last week while Wolfsburg were still searching for their first win in the Bundesliga as the two sides came face to face at Deutsche Bank Park. Koen Casteels nearly gifted the Eagles the opening goal after his poor clearance, however, Kristijan Jakic could only rattle the woodwork with his torpedo-esque effort.

It remained goalless at the break but after the restart, Frankfurt was in for an anticlimax as Maxence Lacroix headed in the opener. Neither side could create any further chances and Wolfsburg returned back home with all three points in the bag.

Schalke 3-1 VfL Bochum

Both Schalke and Bochum were still searching for their first win in the Bundesliga as they met for the first time in 12 years. Bochum had an early sight at goal through Simon Zoller but it was the Royal Blues who broke the deadlock, Dominick Drexler finished from close range after a rebound came in his direction.

Bochum scored only their fourth goal of the season courtesy of Philipp Hofmann who had the minnows back on level-pegging but an own goal from Erhan Masovic had the Veltins-Arena faithful celebrating again. Sebastian Polter headed in the third right at the death to compound Bochum’s miseries, their sixth straight loss in as many games.

Koln 0-1 Union Berlin

High flyers Union Berlin played out a stalemate with Bayern last week and they knew a win on Sunday would take them to the top of the table. An own goal from Timo Hubers whose massive deflection wrong-footed his own keeper had the visitors celebrating just three minutes after the kick-off.

They were also awarded a penalty inside the first ten minutes with Koln goalie Marvin Schwabe keeping his side in the contest with a save. Berlin had another sight at goal through Christopher Trimmel who curled an effort from the edge of the box but his attempt grazed the woodwork and went out of play. In the end, Urs Fischer guided his side to the pinnacle of Bundesliga standings with a narrow win.

Freiburg 0-0 Monchengladbach

Freiburg needed a win to keep themselves at the top of the standings after Union Berlin’s victory but they could only churn out a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Mark Flekken was kept busy throughout the 90 minutes but he stood tall to preserve his clean sheet, there were chances at the other end too but his opposite number Yann Sommer was also on the top of his game as neither side could trouble the scorers and they eventually settled for a stalemate.
