Bayern Munich players celebrate after a great start to the season

There’s an old adage in football, It ain’t over till the fat lady sings. With plenty of late drama on matchday 3 of the Bundesliga, the saying proved to be true to every word. Borussia Dortmund suffered a collapse of epic proportions, the Bayern Munich juggernaut marches on, and both RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen are winless after three outings.

Here’s a complete recap of all the action that took place on matchday 3 of Bundesliga 2022-23.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 Hertha Berlin

Borussia Monchengladbach knew a win would take them top of the table, only until Bayern played against Bochum on Sunday. The Foals nearly got their noses in front as Alassane Plea almost scored a wonderful solo goal, but he was denied by the woodwork.

Monchengladbach was given another lifeline as they earned a penalty for a handball inside the box, and Plea duly dispatched the spot-kick. The home side earned a second penalty but Jonas Hofmann fluffed his effort to keep Hertha in the contest. However, the visitors barely looked threatening, as Daniel Farke’s men won 1-0.

Augsburg 1-2 Mainz

Mainz tamed Augsburg in their own den and they did it in style after Karim Onisiwo put the away side ahead as he latched onto a through pass from Angelo Fulgini to finish with aplomb. Four minutes later, Augsburg was back at level pegging, Ermedin Demirović scored a wonderful back-heel finish to equalise for his side.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the second half but Aaron Martin missed the chance, Mainz did however bag all three points courtesy of a goal from Lee Jae-sung right at the death.

Wolfsburg 0-0 Schalke

Both Wolfsburg and Schalke were looking to secure their first victory of the new season but they couldn’t be separated as they played out a 0-0 draw. Despite the scoreline, the match was full of drama as Schalke were awarded a penalty in the first half but Keon Casteels saved the spot-kick.

The goalie however came off his line, the penalty was retaken, and Casteels denied Simon Terodde again. Josuha Guilavogui thought that he had put Wolfsburg in the lead but his goal was ruled out for offside. Ridle Baku came closest to troubling the scorers but Alexander Schwolow stood tall to earn a point for Schalke.

Stuttgart 0-0 Freiburg

After last week’s late collapse against Dortmund, Freiburg was looking to make amends at the Mercedes Benz Arena and they needed just 11 minutes to break the deadlock. Vincenzo Grifo converted from close range to put the visitors ahead.

Into the second half, both sides had chances but both goalkeepers made impressive saves to keep the scoreline undisturbed. Lilian Egloff nearly equalised for Stuttgart but his shot went agonisingly wide of the goalpost.

Borussia Dortmund 2-3 Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen scored 3 late goals to register a comeback for the ages

Werder Bremen registered a memorable 3-2 win in front of the Yellow Wall. In an action-filled first half, there were chances aplenty, but neither side could get their noses in front until Julian Brandt scored a blinder to put his side in the lead. If Brandt’s goal was impressive, Raphael Guerreiro scored another worldie to double Dortmund’s tally.

Bremen looked down and out with just one minute remaining in regulation time when Lee Buchanan took advantage of some scrappy defending to pull one back. Niklas Schmidt drilled home a header to level the proceedings before Oliver Burke’s goal completely silenced the home crowd to seal an astonishing turnaround.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-3 Hoffenheim

Winless in their previous two games, it was a tense atmosphere at the Bayer Arena as Hoffenheim came to town. The visitors took the lead as Christoph Baumgartner came up with a cheeky back-heel finish to score for the second week running.

Andrej Kramaric further compounded Leverkusen’s miseries as he scored from close range after a rampaging solo run from Ozan Kabak. Georginio Rutter put the game to bed with Hoffenheim’s third, his left-footed shot rifled into the back of the net to cap off a brilliant outing for the 20-year-old.

Union Berlin 2-1 RB Leipzig

Die Roten Bullen visited the Alte Forsterei in search of their first win of the Bundesliga 2022-23 season but instead Union Berlin tamed RB Leipzig 2-1. Theoson Siebatcheu got the hosts up and running with a well-timed finish after he latched on to an inch-perfect pass from his strike-partner Sheraldo Becker. The duo are quickly forming a deadly partnership.

After assisting the first goal, it was time for Becker to get his name on the scoresheet as he drilled home a well-taken left-footed shot as Berlin caught Leipzig on the break. Willi Orban pulled on back for the visitors to give them a glimmer of hope, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Koln

Daichi Kamada has been in a rich vein of form, netting his 2nd goal for Frankfurt in as many games

Eintracht Frankfurt and Koln shared the spoils after playing a 1-1 stalemate at the Deutsche Bank Park. It was a lively contest with chances at both ends but neither side could find that extra edge in the first half. Daichi Kamada continued his good run in front of the goal as he scored his second goal in as many games to draw first blood for the Eagles.

However, the lead lasted for barely 11 minutes as Jan Thielmann equalised for the visitors. The match finished 1-1 as Frankfurt, last year’s UEFA Europa League winners are winless after three league games.

VfL Bochum 0-7 Bayern Munich

The league leaders further extended their grip at the top with a 7-0 hammering of VfL Bochum. Leroy Sane, Matthijs de Ligt, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry all got their names on the scoresheet with summer signing Sadio Mane bagging a brace.

The former Liverpool man seems to be loving life in Bavaria. Bochum was clearly no match for Bayern as the Die Roten juggernaut marches on towards an unprecedented 11th consecutive Bundesliga title in an even grander fashion. The Munich-based side is enjoying the best-ever start to a Bundesliga season for any club as they have 9 points from 3 games with a goal difference of +14.
