Atletico Madrid will host Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano in the 35th round of La Liga. The match will take place on May 9, beginning at 00:30 IST.

The 35th matchday programme of the Spanish La Liga 2021-2022 will end with the Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid CF, and the later will visit their neighbours as the recently crowned Spanish champions – not a pleasant one encounter for the Indians – as it can be seemed like a sort of transfer of the champion’s powers from the former title-holder to the new one.

This Derby Madrileño has no serious tournament significance, hovewer, Real can try to spoil the UCL chances for Athletico.

Parimatchnews will tell you everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming match.

Atletico Madrid News & Current Form:

For Diego Simeone’s side, the post-championship season has certainly not gone well. Before it started, many pundits somehow thought that the Red-and-Whites were the favourites to snatch another one, but it soon turned out to be a mistaken belief. However, the true favourites of the season are those who are based in the capital, but not Atletico Madrid. Atletico, unluckily, failed in the King’s Cup, crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage against Manchester City and, in the league, have still not guaranteed themselves a top-four finish. The Coljoneros are currently in fourth place, but the gap to Betis is only three points. However, the Verdiblancos and Real Sociedad have already lost their matches of the tour, and therefore El Cholo’s team will keep their place even in case of failure in the derby.

In mid-February, Atlético confidently defeated Osasuna away, and it was Pamplona that kicked off the Mattresses’ winning streak in La Liga, which lasted a total of six rounds. This series has helped the Madrid side improve their position in the standings and cement their place in the top four. The successful streak was interrupted by Mallorca (0-1) at the beginning of April. Then, with great difficulty, Simeone’s side won their home game against Espanyol (2-1), followed by a somewhat strange and unexpected draw with Granada at the Wanda Metropolitano (0-0). In the previous fixture, Atletico failed to score again, losing 0-2 to Athletic Bilbao. The visitors may not have deserved to lose at San Mames, but it was nobody’s fault that they failed to convert at least one of their few chances.

Real Madrid News & Current Form:

Real Madrid will face Atletico in a status of reigning Spanish Primera champions and Champions League finalists.

The Los Blancos secured La Liga crowb ahead of schedule when they beautifully beat Espanyol 4-0.

A few days later, Real Madrid reached the Champions League final in epic fashion. They may not be able to explain how they did it, but beating Manchester City in the return leg will undoubtedly be on the list of the most thrilling matches in the history of the tournament.

Speaking about the form, Real have won nine of their previous ten games in the Spanish league. The only exception was the home game against Barcelona, which ended in a surprise 0-4 defeat. Perhaps the team even needed such a shake-up, as we can see they have had no more slip-ups after that frustrating El Clasico thrashing.

What has been said before the match:

Carlo Ancelotti:

“The team is in good shape. We have some doubts over players who haven’t recovered. We’ve had two days off, we’ll try and get the best out of the team.”

“These games are useful for us, they give us a chance to keep out rhythm up. We might not be playing for the league anymore but it’s important to keep the pace of the game and respect the competition. We want to respect our jersey as well, it means we’re obliged to always give it our all”.

“Italians aren’t used to giving a guard of honour. Everyone should do what they feel is best and we have to respect that. We have the utmost respect for Atlético, their players and their coach. They’re our neighbours, friends… If they do it, fine, and if they don’t, that’s okay too. We’ll respect whatever they choose to do”

he spoke on the refusal to organise the guard of honour.

Diego Simeone:

“The reality is what the club said in a press release, explaining perfectly, congratulating Real Madrid above all, the footballers, the technical staff, because they have done a great job. We have respect for Madrid but more for our people. I don’t know if this is represented in other world championships. Each society is different. The Spanish one has this guard of honour for their rivals, [but] as an example, where I come from I don’t use it. We live differently too.”

he clarified the position.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid Prediction:

There was a time when Atlético regularly and at times spectacularly humiliated Real Madrid at home, while invariably losing in Champions League fixtures. To date, the most recent victory for the Indians over the Los Blancos came in August 2018, when they won the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn. In La Liga, however, Simeone’s side last beat Real Madrid back in February 2016. Now, Atlético de Madrid have a good chance of breaking their losing streak, but the Matresses are far from their best form and could well suffer yet another upset at the Wanda Metropolitano.

However, a lot depends on the squad that Carlo Ancelotti will field for the derby and, in fact, on the attitude of the newly crowned Spanish champion, which, by the way, was denied a corridor of honour by Atlético. If Real Madrid get the game going, it could end with another victory over the Colchoneros, but after an emotional and rather energy-consuming victory in the return leg of the Champions League semi-final, there might not be enough ‘petrol’ for the derby, so to speak. Thus, we are looking to refrain from predicting the outcome of the game and will focus on the match total, which is a safer option.

Parimatch News staff prediction:

We say: Real Madrid not to lose and the match total less than 3.5 – Yes.
