Delhi Capitals thrash Kolkata Knight Riders by 44 runs

Delhi Capitals produced an all-round show against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

Delhi Capitals produced an all-round performance to thrash Kolkata Knight Riders by a huge margin of 44 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 contest played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday evening.

After setting a huge total of 215/5 in their first-innings, powered by half centuries from Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, Delhi Capitals had given themselves the best chance of winning against Kolkata Knight Riders, whose batting line-up has not been able to fire in any of the matches that they have played so far.

Despite their struggles, Kolkata Knight Riders managed to score 171 from 19.4 overs, their captain Shreyas Iyer leading the charge scoring 54 which was the only half-century scored by any batsman from the team batting second.

Earlier in the match, the opening pair of Prithvi Shaw and David Warner  set the tone in favour of Delhi Capitals as they added 93 runs from only 8.4 overs, punishing the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers all around the park.

Prithvi Shaw finished with 51 from 29 balls with the help of 7 boundaries and 2 sixes whereas David Warner carried on forward to make 61 from 49 balls with 6 boundaries and 2 sixes.

The other Delhi batsmen tried really hard but they could not push on in the middle overs. Delhi captain Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 27, which came from 14 balls including 2 boundaries and as many sixes.

While Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell were both dismissed in single digit scores of 1 and 8 respectively, Akshar Patel and Shardul Thakur did well towards the end stages of their innings to add crucial runs and push the team’s total past 200.

Delhi and India all-rounder Akshar Patel hit 2 boundaries and a six to make 22 not out from 14 balls whereas Shardul Thakur gave a reminder of his batting skills, hitting 3 sixes and a four to make 29 not out from 11 balls.

In their reply, Kolkata batsmen chipped in with vital contributions but they did not have enough firepower to go past the target of 216 set by Delhi Capitals. Shreyas Iyer top scored with 54 which came from 33 balls, 5 boundaries and 3 sixes whereas the others in Nitish Rana (30), Andre Russell (24), Venkatesh Iyer (18), and Sam Billings (15) tried to provide resistance.

Kuldeep Yadav was the pick among the bowlers for Delhi Capitals as the left-arm spinner took a four-wicket haul in his team’s win.

Delhi Capitals will now take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 16 whereas Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be facing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday, April 15.
