Australia and India Named Main Favorites for Women’s T20 World Cup
Ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup in England, analysts have locked in the top contenders for the title. The reigning champions, Australia, once again lead the pack as the outright favorites due to their years of global dominance. However, experts predict this will be the toughest campaign yet for the leaders, as an in-form Indian team approaches the tournament as their closest and most dangerous challenger.
Both teams have already made a strong statement in their opening matches of this year’s tournament. Australia kicked off their campaign with a dominant 65-run victory over South Africa, posting 172/8 in their 20 overs and restricting their opponents to 107 runs.
Meanwhile, India put on a brilliant performance against their arch-rivals Pakistan in Birmingham, securing a 64-run win. The stars of the match for India were Smriti Mandhana, who scored a solid 68 runs, and Deepti Sharma, who delivered an outstanding bowling performance with a five-wicket haul.
While the spotlight remains on this duo, the tournament hosts, England, also pose a serious threat after starting their home campaign with a massive 87-run win over Sri Lanka. Cricket pundits note that while Australia still holds a psychological edge in knockout games, the growth of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has allowed India to completely close the skill gap, making them fully capable of dethroning the world leaders.
Historically, the Australian team has been absolutely dominant, capturing the last three consecutive World Cup titles in 2018, 2020, and 2023. At the same time, recent major tournament encounters between Australia and India have turned into high-stakes thrillers. In the 2020 World Cup final in Melbourne, India reached the ultimate stage for the first time but fell to Australia under the pressure of a record 86,000-strong crowd. Two years later, at the 2022 Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham, India came within touching distance of the gold medal, only for Australia to snatch victory by a mere 9 runs. The ultimate testament to their rivalry came during the 2023 World Cup semifinal in Cape Town, where India looked in control thanks to an explosive knock by Harmanpreet Kaur, but an unfortunate run-out of their captain cost them the final, allowing Australia to edge through by just 5 runs.
