On the third day of Bangladesh vs New Zealand’s second Test, Glenn Phillips gave a master class in batting on a sharp turner, counterattacking his way to 87 off just 72 deliveries.

On the first evening, Phillips had come in at 46 for 5, on a difficult surface where nearly every ball from the spinners was either Turning Square, keeping extremely low, or both. Despite the hosts’ first-inning total of 172, he led New Zealand to 180 with his aggressive intent.

Bangladesh was 30 ahead of New Zealand at stumps after reaching 38 for 2 in their second innings. There could only be 32.3 overs throughout the entire day due to a delayed start and an early finish due to poor light.

Play on Friday started two and a half hours later than planned because of the gloomy conditions in Dhaka. This came after the entire second day had been ruined by rain.

Overnight batsmen Daryl Mitchell and Phillips used different approaches to stop Bangladesh, who were bowling in combination with left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with New Zealand on 55 for 5 and trailing by 117.

Phillips appeared to go on the attack as early as the second over of the day. Standing deep in the crease most of the time, Phillips swung across the line at full deliveries and in the stump line, and he slashed hard at deliveries that were even slightly short and outside off.

He hit Mehidy for four to a deep point in the second over of the day, then slog-swept and drove him for more boundaries in the 16th.

But Phillips didn’t really care about the conditions. And he continued attacking even though Bangladesh had several fielders on the leg-side boundary most of the time—deep-backward square leg and deep midwicket. Mehidy bowled one full on the pads in the 18th over, setting up his first six, which he slog-swept over a deep square leg.
