On a cloudy day in Dhaka, the play was canceled at 4:16 p.m., at least 14 minutes before it was supposed to end; after the visitors lost half of their team in 49 minutes, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Philips, who had scores of 12 and 5, respectively, were still unbeaten.

13 of the 15 wickets that fell on the opening day of the Dhaka Test were claimed by spin. After Bangladesh’s 172 all-out, New Zealand collapsed to 46 for five, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed three wickets and Taijul Islam two as they ended the day on 55 for 5.

What their batters had suffered at the hands of the New Zealand spinners was returned to them by the Bangladeshi spinners.

On a cloudy day in Dhaka, the play was canceled at 4:16 p.m., at least 14 minutes before it was supposed to end. After the visitors lost half of their team in 49 minutes, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Philips, who had scores of 12 and 5, respectively, were still unbeaten.

Mehidy had two wickets in three balls when Shahadat Hossain made a great catch at short-leg to remove Kane Williamson from the game in the 12th over. One ball later, Tom Blundell found himself lifeless in front of the stumps.

Earlier, Bangladesh collapsed for 172, with the spin trio from New Zealand leading the way. Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner shared eight wickets apiece, with Tim Southee taking the last wicket that went to the bowlers. Mushfiqur Rahim, on the other hand, was dismissed for obstructing the field.

Bangladesh was 80 for 4 at lunchtime as Mushfiqur and Shahadat batted out the 13 overs before the break with a little more ease. Both batters approached the game with a little more common sense, something they were also supposed to do after lunch.

Mushfiqur scored three fours and a slog-swept six in his 35 from 83 balls. Shahadat followed him back to the pavilion in another 20 minutes, where Phillips had him caught on the leg-side for 31. In his 102-ball stay, he hit two fours.

The first-day wicket-taking total of 15 on Wednesday is the most for a Test match in Bangladesh; the 13 wickets claimed by spinners are tied for the most with the Test match between Australia and India in Indore earlier this year.
