All England Open Badminton Championships 2023: Dates, Venues, Top Seeds, Draw, Format Explainer, Defending Champions, and Prize Money

The All England Open is the oldest and the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world where top baddies from around the world take part in this Super 1000 event.

The tournament is played annually and will return this year once again at the Utilita Arena Birmingham. With 155 matches, the Championships will take place over six days in front of a passionate audience.

Schedule

The tournament will start on March 14, Tuesday with the Round of 32 matches being played in all the events including Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The Round of 32 will continue on the second day as well with 40 matches being played throughout the day.

Round of 16 will begin on March 16 in all the events and will culminate on the same day. The quarter-finals and semifinals will take place on March 17 and 18 respectively. The final of all the categories will take place on Sunday, March 19.

Venues

The matches will be played in four courts at Utilita Arena Birmingham, England.

Top Seeds

In Men’s Singles, Viktor Axelsen will be the top-seeded player followed by Jonatan Christie. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Lee Zii Jia are the third and fourth-seeded players in this edition. Chou Tien-Chen and Kunlavut Vitidsarn are fifth-seed and sixth-seed players whereas Kodai Naraoka and Loh Kean Yew are seventh and eighth-seed players.


Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy will be India’s hopes in the upcoming All England Open

Last year’s champion, Axelsen, will look forward to creating history by winning another All-England title whereas Lee Zii Jia would like to repeat his heroics of 2021. From India, all eyes will be on Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy because of their fantastic displays over the last couple of years. Kidambi Srikanth is also right up there in the competition.

In Women’s Singles, Akane Yamaguchi is the top-seeded player this time whereas An Se-young stands in the second spot. Tai Tzu-Ying is the third-seeded player in women’s singles whereas Chen Yufei, He Bingjiao and Wang Zhiyi of China are fourth, fifth and sixth-seed players. Carolina Marin and Ratchanok Intanon are seventh and eighth-seeded players.

In Women’s Singles, Yamaguchi is the favorite to win another title keeping in mind her current form, however, she will get tough competition from the seeded Chinese players going forward. Spaniard Carolina Marin would also want to make a strong comeback in this edition.

From India’s point of view, all eyes will be on PV Sindhu in this category as she has the ability to win this major. Veteran Saina Nehwal is also competing in the competition. It would be a surprise package if Nehwal can bring back her lost touch.

Draw

Top-seeded player Viktor Axelsen received a draw against Lee Cheuk Yiu in the first round whereas Jonatan Christie will play his first-round match against Weng Hong Yang of China. From India, Lakshya Sen received a tough draw against Chou Tien Chen in his first round, however, Prannoy will be up against Wang Tzu Wei.

It is going to be very tough for Lakshya Sen looking at Tien Chen’s record but the young baddie is set to conquer it this time. Hopes will be high on Kidambi Srikanth as well as he will be playing his first match against Toma Junior Popov.

Both Carolina Marin and PV Sindhu will be key for their respective countries in the tournament

In Women’s Singles, Akane Yamaguchi will be up against Mia Blichfeldt while Carolina Marin might have an easy battle against Kirsty Gilmour. India’s PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will play their first match against Zhang Yi Man and Han Yue respectively in women’s singles.

In Men’s Doubles, the top-seeded pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto will play against the South Korean pair of  Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae. India’s pride Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will be in action against Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

In Women’s Doubles, the pair of Chen Qing Chen Jia Yi Fan will be against Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi of Japan. India’s Treesa Joly and Gayatri Gopichand have to face a tough opponent who is seventh-seeded Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai.
